Ca. 100-200 a.D. in Arabia
Ca. 500 a.D. in America (Maya)
Paper came to Europe probably by the muslims which had taken Spain. From the 12th century the paper-making in Europe became more productive. In the middle of the 15th century Gutenberg raised the editions of printed information by inventing his printing machine and the use of seperated letters.
Today paper is more actual than ever – not only because it is a renewable source. The main ingridiense is from wood made pulp.
Often used terms
Art-paper or coated paper - For a better printing result the rough surface of the uncoated paper is being treated with a filler (coat) with the main ingridient: chalk.
In addition one can affect the appearance (shiny, silky, dull). As an extra the filler supports the drying of the ink.
Uncoated or coated paper - To suppress dust creation, the paper is mostly surface glued, otherwise the surface is left rough.
Main usage: business paper, preprints for laser and inkjet-printer.
Satiated paper - By giving pressure and friction, the surface of the paper is being smoothed, but there is no filler used.
Main usage: color-laserprinter, business cards
Chromosulphate-cardboard - Because of a more complicated process, a higher stability stiffness is gained.
Main usage: packaging, postcards
Paper / carton / cardboard - depending on the thickness we speak of paper, carton or cardboard.
Handmade Paper - Out of fashion handmade paper. It has rough edges and a slightly curvy surface.
